Addressing a press conference in Baku, Mustafayev pointed to the agreement between Iran and Azerbaijan on financing the railway project, saying, despite the current international political conditions, talks are still underway to remove the hurdles challenging the plan.
The 350-kilometer railway passing through Astara (Azerbaijan), Astara (Iran), Rasht and Qazvin is aimed at connecting India’s Mumbai to Finland’s Helsinki.
It is part of the the North-South transport corridor, which is meant to connect Northern Europe with Southeast Asia. It will serve as a link connecting the railroads of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.
The project is planned to transport six million tons of cargo per year along the North-South corridor at the first stage, and 15-20 million tons of cargo in the future.
