The UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt visited the Iranian capital Tehran for an official visit at the head of a diplomatic delegation on Monday and held separate meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as well as with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani.
Answering to reporters’ question on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said about the one-day visit which had been "planned a long time ago" that it took place on November 19 "despite some domestic political problems in the UK."
Ghasemi added “in separate meetings of Mr. Jeremy Hunt with [Iran’s] foreign minister and the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, a range of issues including the JCPOA and commitments of European countries, especially the E3 to Iran, the most important developments in the region, especially the dire and humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen, and the necessity of putting an end to the Western arms support for the invaders to the land and the innocent people of Yemen were discussed, and the viewpoints of the Islamic Republic of Iran in this regard were detailed.”
Ghasemi noted that on the sidelines of these meetings, the British official also raised the issue of a dual national prisoner in Iran, adding "our country’s authorities emphasized her conviction in a court of justice and the independence of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran."
The foreign ministry spokesman further noted the Iranian authorities had also stressed that “the imprisoned person was a citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran and that she had been tried and convicted according to Iran's domestic laws.”
