Among the Iranian-linked banks, companies and vessels that the US imposed sanctions against on Monday was an Iranian crude oil tanker called the Sanchi, which sank after a collision and fiery explosion in January, as well as a bank called Tat which closed in September 2012.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote in a tweet late Monday that the US’s designation of “a bank that was closed 6 years ago, and a ship that sank last year in a widely televised saga” indicates a “desperate” psychological operation to “amplify the list of sanctioned Iranian entities”, and unintentionally also proving it is “targeting ordinary Iranians indiscriminately.”
Zarif’s tweet concluded by hashtagging #UsisIsolated.
Prior to this tweet, Zarif had said that the US’ re-imposition of sanctions, which target “ordinary people”, was in defiance of “UN top court & Security Council”, adding that the “US bullying is backfiring, not just because JCPOA is important, but because the world can't allow Trump & Co. to destroy global order.”
