TEHRAN, Aug. 11 (MNA) – A large fire has broken out in the Miankaleh Biosphere Reserve in northern Iranian Mazandaran Province, a site which is demarcated by UNESCO as a protected zone, and it is still burning.

According to eye witnesses, the fire broke out on Friday evening in Miankaleh Peninsula located in the southeastern region of the Caspian Sea in an area on the border between two northern Iranian provinces of Mazandaran and Golestan.

According to the Director General of Mazandaran Department of Environment Hosseinali Ebrahimi the fire is burning in an area between Ghale and Khazini which is located between the two provinces of Mazandaran and Golestan despite fighter fighters’ efforts to put it out since last night.

Hosseinali Ebrahimi said that firefighters were dispatched to the area with appropriate equipment from the fire departments in the adjacent cities.

He said that firefighters faced difficulty extinguishing the fire last night due to darkness and smoke.

This is not the first time this year that the area caches fire as several cases of fire have so far been reported in the protected zone.

Back in July, another fire broke out in the area, burning at least 12 hectares within 48 hours.
