TEHRAN, Oct. 24 (MNA) – In a period of five months this year, Iran has exported $121 million worth of seafood which shows about 28% increase compared to the same period last year.

Isa Golshahi, Iran Fisheries Organization’s Director General for Quality Improvement, said in terms of weight, the country's seafood exports reached 39,000 tons in the period between March 21 to August 22, 2017.

According to him, the amount of canned tuna exported in this period stood at about 350 tons worth $1.6 million dollars. He noted that 800 million tons of canned tuna in Iran are annually produced in provinces such as Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, Isfahan, Gilan and Alborz.

Golshahi described Iran as the largest tuna fish farmer in the western Indian Ocean, saying Iranian fishers catch nearly 200,000 tons of tuna fish in a year.

“Last year, we exported 110,000 tons of seafood including fish and shrimps, and our major seafood exports to Russia comprised trout and shrimps,” he said, adding that the exports were worth over $412 million.

Golshahi further maintained that Iran is the largest producer of freshwater trout in the world, saying the country has recently begun producing this type of fish in sea water.
