Hossein Zolfaghari, Iranian Deputy Interior Minister for Security and Police Affairs, met with Afghanistan’s security officials to mull over security, border, and Afghan-nationals-in-
Iran, reported the official website of the Iranian ministry.
The two sides exchanged views on the issues of mutual concern and a written copy of the reached agreements and discussed issues was signed by the two sides at the end of the meeting.
Iran and Afghanistan share 945 km length of shared borders and around three million Afghan refugees are living in Iran since the USSR war on Afghanistan started in 1978 and it was entailed by protracted civil war and instability.
These two issues along with the high rate of opium production in Afghanistan which has given hot incentive to drug traffickers have made Afghanistan a security burden of high cost for Iran.
More than 350,000 Afghan refugee children are now in school in Iran while some 48,000 undocumented Afghan children were allowed last year to enroll for the first time in Iranian public schools, according to a recent UNHCR report.
