President Erdogan was welcomed at the airport by Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Shariatmadari.
His visit comes on the heels of the official trip of Chief of the General Staff of Turkish Armed Forces, Hulusi Akar, to Tehran during which the Turkish army chief conferred with Iranian senior officials on expansion of military and security cooperation in the region.
President Erdogan said in a press conference that his trip to Iran is taking place in line with participating in the joint strategic council meeting. He also noted that the referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan will be on top of his agenda for consultation with President Rouhani and Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei.
Following Erdogan’s visit, a roadmap will be outlined for further steps in Turkey, the Turkish president added.
Fighting terrorism and preserving the geopolitical borders of the region have been highlighted by Iranian President Rouhani as the two top priority of Iran and Turkey in developing bilateral ties.
