TEHRAN, Jun. 10 (MNA) – The Iranian outfit conceded a defeat against European champions Turkey at 2017 Men’s U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship (2017 U23WWBC) in Toronto.

Young wheelchair basketball players of Iran met Turkish rivals at group stage of the prestigious international event. The Turkish outfit got the upper hand and pulled out a 71-53 victory over Iran.

The teams appeared to be an even match throughout the first half of the game. Turkey claimed a small two-point lead by the end of the first quarter and they were able to build momentum to slowly widen the gap. For the second half of the game, Iran was unable to match the Turkish point producers.

Iran opened the 2017 Men’s U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship with a 72-68 victory over Australia.

In their third encounter, Persian basketballers are slated to meet host Canada at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

The Iranian squad comprises Amirreza Ahmadi, Mahdi Mandegari, Ali Karimi, Mojtaba Kamali, Mohammad Hassan Sayyari, Homayoun Asgari, Mahdi Abbasi, Peyman Mizan, Hassanali Kabi, Seyed Mehdi Mousavi and Reza Eyvazi who are led by Hassan Palar.

A total of 12 nations, competing in two groups, are showcasing wheelchair basketball’s elite skill and athleticism at the tournament. Iran has been seeded against Australia, Turkey, host Canada, Brazil and Italy in Group 1 while the second group contains national teams of Britain, Germany, Japan, the US, France and South Africa.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada is hosting the top junior male wheelchair basketball players on the planet from June 8-16, 2017 for the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Men’s U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship.

The IWBF U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship is an international wheelchair basketball competition contested by the men's and women's under-23 national teams of the members of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF), the sport's global governing body. The event is held every four years.
