TEHRAN, Apr. 24 (MNA) – Iran men's junior national basketball team has claimed the title at the 7th edition of the West Asia Basketball Association (WABA) Junior Championship.

On Saturday evening, the Iranian juniors pulled out a 72-64 win over Lebanon in a match staged at Azadi Basketball Hall in western Tehran.

Persian basketball players had previously recorded third consecutive victories against Syria, Iraq and Jordan on road to the final showdown and managed to stand on top of the podium undefeated.

The loss against Iran marked the first defeat of the Lebanese side who landed second overall. The third place was occupied by Syrian basketball players.

The 7th edition of WABA Junior Championship started in Tehran, the Islamic Republic of Iran, on April 19, and came to an end on April 23, 2017.

The tournament had brought together national junior basketball teams from Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Iran and Lebanon, as the top two outfits, have been awarded with tickets to 2017 FIBA Asia Cup which will be the 29th continental basketball championship in Asia. The tournament is organized by FIBA Asia and will take place from 10 August to 20 August 2017 in Lebanon. The Nuhad Nawfal Stadium will host the tournament's matches.
