BEIJING, Jan. 16(MNA) – The Chinese government reiterated to the United States that the One China Policy is the fundamental principle of bilateral relations and is "non-negotiable," the Foreign Ministry said Sunday on its website.

The statement, made by Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang, directly responds to US President-elect Donald Trump's statement that the One China policy on Taiwan is about to be negotiated and that he is not committed to it.

"Everything is under negotiation including (the single S China policy)," Trump said Friday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

However, Lu emphasized in an official notification that there is only one China in the world, and that the island of Taiwan is an inalienable part of it.

The government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents China, "which is an internationally recognized fact and nobody can change it," said the spokesman.

In this regard, the diplomat urged those in the United States to realize the great sensitivity of the Taiwan issue.

He called on the current US Administration to respect the commitments made by previous US governments to the One China policy and the principles of the three joint communiques.

He also urged the White House to avoid undermining the Taiwan and preserve the healthy and steady development of bilateral relations and cooperation in important areas between the two largest economies in the world.

Washington recognizes since 1979 that the island is part of 'One China'.
