JCPOA Joint Commission, a group tasked with monitoring commitments to a nuclear deal between Tehran and 5+1, while reaffirming the importance of commitments to the lifting of sanctions under JCPOA especially in relation to Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), underlined guarantees provided by the United States that the extension would not violate the nuclear deal and has no effect on the process of lifting the sanctions under JCPOA as well as imposing no limitations over companies to hold business and trade transactions with the Islamic Republic.
The Joint Commission also reaffirmed obligations of the parties regarding the lifting of sanctions on an ongoing basis and in particular in accordance with paragraph 21 of the nuclear deal.
Held on the eve of the first anniversary of the implementation of JCPOA in Vienna, the Joint Commission is composed of the 5+1 group and Iran, and was chaired on behalf of EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, by EEAS Secretary General Helga Schmid and attended at the level of deputy foreign ministers and political directors.
The Joint Commission meeting was specifically convened in response to the concerns raised in the letter Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif addressed to High Representative Mogherini, as coordinator of the Joint Commission, on 16 December 2016.
Upon Iran's request, the Joint Commission meeting was preceded by a Sanctions Working Group meeting which was attended at the level of experts.
