TEHRAN, Jan. 08 (MNA) – Leader’s envoy to Supreme National Security Council has arrived in Damascus on Sun. to hold talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad on fighting terrorism.

Ali Shamkhani is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad and the head of Syria's National Security Bureau Major General Ali Mamlouk, and confer on bilateral relations, regional issues, Syria’s development and the latest status on combating terrorism.

Upon arrival at Damascus Airport, Shamkhani told reporters that his visit is in line with the close consultations among the two countries’ senior officials for improving the level of coordination and joint cooperation between Iran, Syria and Russia in the fight against terrorism.

“Over five years has passed since the victorious resistance of Syrian nation and government against Takfiri terrorism and its sponsors, and this trend has proved that the will of nations cannot be changed by the instrument of terror, sanctions and intimidation,” he said.

Shamkhani who coordinates Iran’s political, military and security measures with Russia and Syria, deemed the liberation of Aleppo a turning point for the Syrian crisis, adding “concurrent with the increase in military coordination for combating terrorism, it is necessary to activate political capacities in order to achieve a comprehensive approach to preserve the ceasefire and start dialogs between the armed militants and the Syrian government.”

Shamkhani further stressed that the unconstructive approach of certain Western and regional countries toward the Syrian crisis has been effective in escalation of political and military tensions, adding “terrorism, military aggression and illegal measures will all fail to impose an outside will on the Syrian people.”
