Iranian Health Minister Hassan Hashemi along with ministers and high-level representatives of the 21 other countries and territories of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region is currently in Cairo, Egypt, to take part in the 63rd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean from 3 to 6 October 2016.
On the sidelines of the session, Hashemi met with Dr. Margaret Chan, the Director-General of WHO. He also held a separate meeting with his Omani counterpart and conferred with him on the most important health issues of regional countries.
During the 63rd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, a wide-range of progress reports were presented including: eradication of poliomyelitis; emerging and re-emerging diseases, including dengue and dengue; haemorrhagic fever; prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases; implementation of the International Health Regulations; universal health coverage and the development of a package of essential health services.
In the four-day program, the 8th Award of the State of Kuwait Prize in 2015 for the Control of Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, was conferred to Iranian Professor Nizal Sarrafzadegan for her significant contribution in the field of cardiovascular diseases.
