Competing in the second chance group for a bronze medal, Habibollah Akhlaghi was overcome by Denis Maksymilian Kudla of Germany 1-3.
He had previously breezed past Saman Tahmasebi, Iranian born representative of Republic of Azerbaijan, in Round of 16 following his sweet first round victory in the fight against Zakarias Berg from Sweden.
The 85kg Iranian wrestler had also lost to Russian in another Round of 16 encounter Davit Chakvetadze 0-5 to miss the chance of a gold medal.
Medal winners of the 85kg weight category were Davit Chakvetadze of Russia, Ukraine’s Zhan Beleniuk and the Belarusian Javid Hamzatov who snatched gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Akhlaghi’s elimination was not Iran’s only failure in Greco-Roman event as Bashir Babajanzadeh also dropped out of Men's Greco-Roman 130 kg wrestling tournament at Rio 2016.
Iran’s heavyweight wrestler, who had struck an off draw in the first round, faced and thrashed China’s Meng Qiang 3-1 in the second.
Later, he conceded a 1-3 defeat against German Eduard Popp and had to end his career given the German rival’s failure to reach finals later on.
The title of 130kg group went to Mijaín López of Cuba while Turkey’s Rıza Kayaalp and Russia’s Sergey Semenov stood in second and third places, respectively.
