Following the rise in Iran’s power consumption as well as the gas between production and consumption of the energy carrier, a new power station unit was put into operation.
Accordingly, with the official launch of the second gas unit of Gol Gohar Combined-Cycle Power Plant, 166 megawatts were added to the country’s power generation capacity to reach a total of 74 thousand megawatts.
It is worth mentioning that at the present time the actual electricity production in Iran resides between 52 to 54 thousand megawatts.
Situated in the city of Sirjan in Kerman Province, Gol Gohar Combined-Cycle Power Plant is being constructed in two phases, including four gas units, each with 166 megawatts in power generation capacity, and two 160 MW steam units.
A combined-cycle power plant, or CCPP, uses both gas and steam turbines to produce up to 50% more electricity from the same fuel than a traditional simple-cycle plant. The waste heat from the gas turbine is routed to the nearby steam turbine, which generates extra power.
As part of the drive to reduce the energy sector's role in air pollution, a number of gas-fueled power plants are being replaced with combined-cycle plants.
The construction of Gol Gohar Power Plant is now 67 percent through and all its production units are expected to come on stream in the coming year.
