TEHRAN, Jul. 23 (MNA) – Iran’s Damavand Destroyer has been equipped with chaff dispensing systems, a radar countermeasure for self-defense, Navy commander Sayyari said Saturday.

Iranian Navy Commander Habibollah Sayyari noted that the Navy’s vessels have been outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, adding “once a product has passed the operational testing, production, and the final testing phases, it will be installed on all navy ships. You can be sure that the new equipment that was installed on Jamaran Destroyer last year has been installed on the rest of destroyers and guided-missile cruisers as well.”

The commander went on to add that chaff dispensing systems, used to distract radar-guided missiles from their targets, have already been installed on all destroyers and cruisers, including Damavand Destroyer.

“The chaff dispensing systems have been tested successfully and as such, have been mounted on our destroyers,” he said.

Chaff dispensing systems are a radar countermeasure in which aircraft or other targets spread a cloud of small, thin pieces of aluminum which either appears as a cluster of primary targets on radar screens or swamps the screen with multiple returns. The system is mostly installed on military aircraft and warships to distract radar-guided missiles from their targets.
