NEW YORK, Jul. 13 (MNA) – Syria's Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari affirmed that establishing stability in the Middle East region demands that the UN and Security Council take measures to compel Israel to withdraw from the occupied Syrian Golan.

Speaking during a Security Council session on "The Situation in the Middle East" on Tuesday, al-Jaafari said the Israeli occupation authorities must be obliged to abide by the relevant international resolutions, especially resolution no 497 for 1981, and stop their hostile practices and withdraw from the Golan to the line of June 4, 1967.

This issue should be given serious attention as the Israeli authorities continue systematic violations of human rights, going on with their settlement activities, repression of the Golan people and stealing its natural resources, including oil and water, he added.

Al-Jaafari cited that the Israeli occupation authorities have recently expropriated thousands of acres of land and embarked on establishing 750 new farms in the Golan to bring new settlers, referring also to the continued arrests of many Syrians, including the longest-serving prisoner Sudqi al-Maqt.

Israel did not stop at all the previous practices but went far beyond to openly provide support to al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups in the disengagement zone, such as Jabhat al-Nusra, endangering the safety of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) personnel.

The Syrian Ambassador referred to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories in defiance of the tens of UN resolutions that affirm the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination, return to their homeland and establishing their independent state.

"Now after all those resolutions and after more than half a century of Israel's occupation of the Arab territories, we have the right to question the credibility of such sessions in dealing with this important file," he said.

Al-Jaafari wondered "Is it not the time for these influential international forces to find the proper formula to implement the UN resolutions on the Arab-Israeli conflict?"

He criticized "some inappropriate comments" against Syria made by some permanent representatives, namely those of the US and the EU, saying "those comments are mainly aimed at diverting attention from the subject of this item in order to reduce pressure on Israel…instead of working in a serious and responsible manner to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Palestinian issue through a just and comprehensive solution."
