Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to meet President Rouhani and a number of senior Iranian officials. During his meeting with President Rouhani, the two sides are expected to confer on issues regarding expansion of bilateral ties in various fields of mutual interest, as well as topics on regional and international peace and stability.
Modi’s visit is the first visit of an Indian prime minister to Iran after 15 years, which has gained further significance following the implementation of nuclear deal and the lift of international sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
The MoUs and agreements that are expected to be signed during the visit are mostly in the areas of economy, investment, trade, transportation, development of ports, culture, scientific and academic cooperation.
One of the MoUs the officials have put the most emphasis on is Chabahar Port trilateral agreement to be signed by Iran, India and Afghanistan, which will allow India access to Afghanistan via the strategically located Iranian port of Chabahar on the Sea of Oman.
In a Tweet posted on his official Twitter account upon arrival, PM Modi expressed hope that his visit would further boost economic cooperation between the two countries.
Experts believe that Modi’s visit to Tehran and the singing of memoranda will begin a new chapter in Tehran-New Delhi’s expanding relations.
