TEHRAN, Jan. 28 (MNA) – President Hassan Rouhani urged UNESCO to put its all efforts in fighting violence and protecting cultural heritage in countries like Syria and Iraq.

Rouhani made the remarks in a meeting with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova in Paris this morning.

Praising the efforts made by the organization in protecting Iran’s culture and introduceing it to the world, Rouhani regretted “unfortunately the historical and cultural heritage of the Middle East region is under threat of destruction by terrorist groups; without cultural heritage there would be no religious and cultural identity.”

“Ruining the cultural heritage is a way for terrorist groups to recruit the youth as it cuts the relations of the young generation with its historical identity and cultural background,” said Rouhani.

Iranian president called for more active participation of UNESCO in cultural arena and using the cultural capacities to encounter violence and terrorism especially in regard to protection of cultural and historical sites.

Noting WAVE resolution and the need to use cultural means in fight against terrorism, Rouhani said culture and cultural means are the key factors in achieving goals of this resolution.

Bokova, for her part, deemed the destruction of historical sites and cultural heritage as “organized acts” and “humane tragedy” saying, “UNESCO is aware of its great responsibility regarding these crimes; breaking the cultural ties between different communities is a goal for terrorists.”

“Our focus is now on youth as the terrorist groups are trying hard to attract them,’ said UNESCO chief.

She further extended her congratulations to President Rouhani on implementation of JCPOA, adding the deal proves the great power of diplomacy.
