Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo addressing the meeting of UN General Assembly on Monday which was held to review the status of immigrants in the Mediterranean region, referred to the issue of Syrian refugees demanding action on the part of the international community to the refugee crisis in different parts of the world.
“The issue of refugees and asylum seekers needs to be resolved at its roots, because they merely mark symptoms of a problem rather than the problem itself,” he noted.
“Refugees in the Mediterranean region are fleeting from conflicts and violence in their home countries majority of which is the result of crimes and atrocities of the terrorists and extremists,” said Khoshroo asserting “as long as we fail to effectively deal with terrorist and extremist groups, the issue of refugees will remain.”
He further underlined that, “currently, almost all the world is aware that the military intervention in some countries in the Middle East over the past decade has largely contributed to the rise of extremism and created the ideal space for the evil monster of terrorism.”
The Iranian envoy further pointed out the role of those who violate or ignore the international law in creating the existing circumstances.
Referring to the long history of the Palestinians’ sufferings, Khoshroo emphasized “as long as the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land continues, the main cause of the crisis will remain and the region will not become stable.
Iran’s permanent representative to the UN noted the world’s discriminated encounter with the issue of refugees; “regardless of the causes of the refugee crisis, these people are the victims of wrong policies of some countries; therefore, they will always require the support of the international community.”
The official further called for an objective treatment based on humanitarian principles on the part of the international community adding “unfortunately, this has not always been the case and over the previous years, Iran has received millions of Iraqis and Afghans with a minimum of international support.”
At the end of his remarks, the Iranian envoy welcomed the international attention to the crisis of refugees and asylum seekers in Europe; “the crises associated with them deserve due attention and the international community must pay attention to the refugees regardless of who they are and where they are heading," concluded Khoshroo.
