MOSCOW, Oct. 14 (MNA) – President Vladimir Putin denied on Tuesday that Russia was pursuing political interests in Syria away from the struggle against terrorism as a global threat, and questioned the legitimacy of the US air operations in that country.

Putin said during a forum of business people and bankers that his country was not looking for leadership, as there can only be one leader in Syria, the people.

He noted that the US-led operation, without UN mandate and approval from the Government in Damascus, has not had any result in over a year of bombings in Syrian territory.

He insisted that Russia is trying to contribute to the struggle against terrorism, which represents a threat equally to Russia, the United States, Europe and the whole world.

He criticized that Washington has been keeping silence to collaboration proposals, which only function at the level of military contacts.

Russia started officially on Sep.30 air raids at positions of terrorist groups on Syria, using combat planes equipped with high precision weapons, at a request from Syrian President Bashar al Assad.
