TEHRAN, Aug. 16 (MNA) – The 8th Summit of the Islamic Radio and Television Union (IRTVU) was opened today morning with attendance of 220 radio and TV networks from 35 countries.

According to MNA, Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Mohammad Sarafraz, director managers of TV networks and radio stations and broadcasting institutions, and some Islamic Countries’ Ministers of Culture are participating in the opening ceremony of this international assembly.

Other keynote speakers and participants at this event include Secretary General of the union Ali Karimian, Iran Leader’s top adviser Ali Akbar Velayat, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Deputy Secretary-General of Lebanese Hezbollah Sheikh Naeem Ghassem, and Minister of Information in the Government of Syria Omran Ahed Al Zoubi.

In the opening ceremony of a media equipment exhibition on the sidelines of the event, Ali Akbar Velayati said that, “today, the West is dominating the whole media and Islamic countries and the third world can confront this domination and hegemony only if they incorporate the necessary tools, one of these tools being the media present in Muslim countries.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has a great responsibility because it would be impossible to deal with the hegemonic system without media equipment and there is an increasing need for media facilities and the importance of visual, written, oral, and electronic media is rising”, he added.

Unveiling of ‘Halal Media’ brand and the opening of the sixth edition of the Islamic Film Market are also to be held on the sidelines of the assembly.

The 8th general assembly of IRTVU is being held under the motto of “the Prophet of Mercy; the mission of resistance media” and will last for three days.
