The event taking place in the port city of Bandar-e-Anzali was attended by senior officials, including Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari.
Damavand is a Jamaran-class destroyer with unique features to meet the demands of the Iranian naval forces in the country’s northern waters.
It is, however, longer but lighter than Jamaran and is capable of tracking and targeting aerial, surface and sub-surface targets simultaneously. It is equipped with a cruise missile system, torpedo launchers, 40-mm and 76-mm cannons, radar processing systems as well as tactical surface and aerial radars.
According to Sayyari, cutting-edge technology was employed in building Damavand destroyer which is equipped with more advanced cruise missiles than those of domestically designed and built Jamaran destroyer.
During the ceremony, Ali Shamkhani noted that militarism had no place in the Caspian Sea, stressing tremendous efforts have been made to display the country's strength and create deterrence against common threats especially terrorism based on an outlook on collective security.
“In the face of the cooperation approach Iran has adopted in its interactions with the neighboring countries, some powers attempt to create division and fabricate gaps to highlight their presence in the region,” said Shamkhani.
The Iranian Navy launched Jamaran, its first indigenously-built destroyer, in the waters of the Persian Gulf in February 2010. The 1,420-ton destroyer is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities and has a top speed of up to 30 knots and a helipad.
