Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi delivered a speech Saturday during the expert panel of JCPOA in the International Conference on Disarmament and Non-proliferation nuclear weapons in Moscow. The Moscow Nonproliferation Conference commenced on Friday, focusing on several topics related to NPT, disarmament of nuclear weapons and peaceful application of nuclear energy.
Araghchi stressed that JCPOA is not only a milestone for diplomacy, but it has opened a new pathway toward a new season of nonproliferation treaty on nuclear weapons.
The Iranian official stated, “one of the important features of JCPOA is the creation of balance between the two major pillars of NPT that is “nonproliferation of nuclear weapons” and “peaceful application of nuclear energy”. On the one hand, the agreement ensures the peaceful aspects of Iran’s nuclear program, and on the other hand, it honors Iran’s right to make peaceful use of nuclear energy and guarantees the enactment of the said right.”
In addition, Araghchi elaborated on the current situation following the recent developments and noted “while the International Agency of Atomic Energy has certified Iran’s adherence to JCPOA on several occasions, the United States has not been compliant with its obligations and has blatantly violated the nuclear deal on many occasions.”
Araghchi gave a few examples of Washington’s noncompliance with the landmark deal and highlighted that the country’s biggest violation was its lack of commitment to articles 26, 28 and 29; "according to these articles, the US is required to enact JCPOA with goodwill and in a constructive atmosphere, as well as to refrain from any actions that could damage Iran’s interests. Particularly, the country is obliged to observe these principles during the public speeches of its officials.”
He went on to add that Trump’s violations create an uncertain and ambiguous atmosphere regarding JCPOA and wavers international economic communities’ decisions to work with Iran.
Without doubt, elongation of such a destructive atmosphere around Iran and the nuclear deal is unacceptable and will definitely bear consequences, he added.
"While violating JCPOA, the US is accusing others of such conduct. This behavior cannot continue and the US must accept the consequences of its actions," Araghchi stressed.
The Iranian diplomat further ruled out any modification to the nuclear deal, stressing that the agreement would not be open to re-negotiation.
