Tehran-Moscow ties in new phase

TEHRAN, Mar. 29 (MNA) – President Rouhani told reporters that Iran and Russia have great potential and the necessary political will to develop cooperation and bilateral relations have entered into a new phase.

Hassan Rouhani made the remarks while speaking to reporters at Vnukovo International Airport prior to leaving Moscow on Tuesday late evening.

“Russia is one of the members of 5+1 countries and has helped Iran a lot in implementation of the nuclear deal and using peaceful nuclear technology,” he underlined.

Stressing that relations with Russia is important for Iran on international and regional levels, the president said “terrorism is a big threat for the region these days and the two countries have had good cooperation in fighting terrorism and securing regional peace and settlement of problems in Iraq and Syria.”

The Iranian President went on to enumerate main axes of his talks with Vladimir Putin including transit of goods by connecting India to Eastern and Western Europe through Iran and Russia.

“Iran also holds trilateral relations with Russia and Turkey over resolving the Syrian crisis and settling peace in the region as well as with Russia and Azerbaijan over transit of goods and commodities,” he asserted.

He said major long-term projects were underway between the two countries in oil and gas sector; “new partnership will also begin in railway sector as Iran will purchase new railcars and exploit Russian technology to electrify railroads.”

“Mr. Putin voiced readiness to deliver modern medium-range Sukhoi SuperJet-100 aircraft to Iran and helicopters for national ambulance aviation,” noted the official adding that Russia was constructing a thermal power plant in Bandar Abbas and building of nuclear power houses was being negotiated.

Rouhani also enumerated other issues on which Tehran and Moscow shared similar views including preferential trade with 5 Eurasian countries, legal regime of the Caspian Sea as well as facilitating visa issuance for tourists as well as expansion of cultural and scientific relations.

“Overall, the visit to Russia was constructive as venues for development of ties were reviewed,” underscored Iran’s President concluding “great potentials exist for developing relations between Iran and Russia and both governments possess sufficient political will to bolster cooperation; we enjoy good relations with Russia and third countries over bilateral and trilateral issues which is promising of a bright future for the region.”
