Rouhani voices confidence for Iran’s next parliament

TEHRAN, May 08 (MNA) – President Rouhani deemed the resolution of the country’s problems depending on a ‘common strategy’ between government and parliament, saying he has ‘high hopes’ for the 10th Majlis, which is set to convene May 28.

President Rouhani made the remarks in a government meeting with representatives of the 10th parliament on Saturday night, adding “the common goal of the government and parliament is solving the current problems and ensuring people’s contentment, and this can be made possible through further cooperation in order to accelerate the realization of sustained economic boom.”

Rouhani said people’s participation in the Feb. 26 parliamentary elections indicates the same message of the massive voter turnout for the 2013 presidential elections, adding “people showed that they still have faith in the strategy of ‘moderation and prudence’ for the success of the country in achieving its goals.”

He said the establishment of Iran’s nuclear rights and efforts made to remove the international sanctions have been a great task which the government had prioritized and ultimately succeeded in achieving under the guidance of Leader Ayat. Khamenei, support from the three branches of the government and the nation.

The President also made a point about the sharp decline in oil prices as sanctions were imposed against Iran’s oil exports, saying “we will soon retake our position in the oil market and a part of banking issues and other obstacles will be gradually resolved.”

He also considered water and environmental issues as other priorities of the government, adding “almost all provinces across the country are gripped with water shortages; we have taken many measures to resolve the issue and I promise that the process will continue faster until the problem has been taken care of.”

President Rouhani further congratulated Iranian women on electing a record number of women to represent them in the 10th parliament. The 18 women elected make up 6% of the new cohort of 290 MPs, and show a double increase compared to the nine women who hold seats in the current parliament.
