TEHRAN, Jan. 8 (MNA) – Deputy Minister of Health in Research and Technology says that during Ahmadinejad presidency Iran has been up from 51st to 18th in the world in medical sciences.”

In a meeting with the country’s health directors and deans of medical schools, Dr. Mostafa Ghanei added that “science production was to grow at 25 per cent, but last year, we reached 50 per cent and the number of medical papers rose from 10,000 to 15,000 last year.”

 Ghanei said that according to the Fifth Development Plan, Iranian universities must have been placed among the first 1 per cent worldwide by the end of the plan, but now, while only 2 years into the plan, 6 Iranian universities have found their places among the world’s top 1 per cent.

 “At the beginning of the 8th Administration, we produced only 8 biotechnological drugs. No we produce 30 and the number will reach 50 next year,” he added.

Deputy of Research and Technology said that “In 1988, Russian scientists came here to teach us how to make biotechnological drugs, but now we export drugs there. In less than 2 years we have produced and economized on worth $500m drug ingredients.”

He considered 12,000 faculty members, 4,000 doctoral medical students, and 2600 specialist assistants in the Ministry of Health as a great wealth for the advancement of science and research and added “Last year 2,200 kidney transplants and 400 liver, heart, and lung transplants were carried out in the country and now we accept patients from overseas.”

He demanded more attention from the government to the health budget so that the rapid development trend does not stop.
