TEHRAN, July 23 (MNA) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has said that the allies of the United States have launched a new type of war against Syria.

According to the Daily Star, Syrian troops were fighting with armed rebels in parts of Damascus and the second city Aleppo on Monday.

The opposition groups, supported by the West and certain Arab countries, have started an unabated guerrilla war against Syria, which has so far led to the death of hundreds of innocent people from both sides.

According to unconfirmed reports, extremist groups linked to al-Qaeda terror network have joined the opposition.

Some analysts say the insurgency is aimed to topple the Syrian government due to its support for the resistance groups in Lebanon and Palestine.

Amir-Abdollahian, in an interview with the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency published on Monday, said that “the enemies of the axis of resistance” are venting their hatred on the people of Syria and “a new type of war by U.S. allies is currently underway against Syria.”

“That evil global union that experienced the bitter taste of defeat in the 33 and 22-day wars certainly will once again feel defeat in the full-scale terrorist war against Syria,” Amir-Abdollahian stated.

The diplomat was referring to Israel’s 33-day war against Hezbollah in 2006, in which about 130 Israeli soldiers lost their lives as Hezbollah resistance fighters shattered the myth of the invincibility of the Israeli army.

In the 22-day war against Hamas, Israel again failed to achieve its goals, which was to crush the resistance against the occupation of Palestine.

Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Iran’s position that dialogue is the only viable solution to the Syrian crisis and said the “arming terrorists” will get nowhere and insisted that the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to support the Syrian people and the reforms being implemented by President Bashar al-Assad.

“There is only political solution to the Syrian issue, and continued foreign intervention in Syria will only lead to the spread of terrorism in the entire region,” he added.
