TEHRAN, July 9 (MNA) -- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has said that negotiations held by certain countries with the aim of removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from office or forcing him into exile have failed.

Amir-Abdollahian, who is Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, made the remarks during a press conference in Amman on Sunday after a meeting with Jordanian Prime Minister Fayez al-Tarawneh, the Persian service of ISNA reported.

Amir-Abdollahian described the idea of forcing the Syrian president out of power or driving him into exile as a “joke”, adding that Iran condemns foreign interference in the internal affairs of the Arab country.

He went on to say that a military campaign against Syria would not be possible and such an act of adventurism would be “stupid” and “catastrophic”.

“Iran has adopted a clear stance toward the developments occurring in the region and has never intervened in the ongoing developments,” Amir-Abdollahian stated.

The crisis engulfing Syria should be resolved through “diplomatic channels,” he said, adding, “Syria is exposed to a great danger.”

Amir-Abdollahian also said, “Iran will vigorously support efforts to find a solution to the Syrian crisis and will help Bashar al-Assad implement reforms.”

Iran has put forward a number of proposals to Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League joint special envoy on Syria, to help improve the situation, and enough time should be given to the Syrian government to bring the reform plan to fruition, he added.

And Syria can defend itself without Iran’s help, the Iranian deputy foreign minister noted.
