TEHRAN, Feb. 15 (MNA) – Iran’s representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has severely censured the United States for failing to meet its international obligations with respect to the total destruction of chemical weapons.

Ambassador Kazem Gharibabadi, who is also Iran’s ambassador to the Netherlands, made the remarks during the 67th Session of the Executive Council of the OPCW which was recently held in The Hague.

Commenting on the deadline of April 29, 2012, which has been set for the total destruction of all chemical weapons, he said unfortunately the world should wait another decade because of the U.S. failure to meet the deadline, and as a result the next generations would definitely blame “us” for the failure.

April 29, 2012 has been set as the final deadline for the total eradication of all chemical weapons, but the U.S., as a country which has the largest stockpiles of chemical weapons, has officially announced that it would not meet the 2012 deadline and has set 2021 as its target date.

Iran has said the U.S. decision to retain its stockpiles of chemical weapons after the 2012 deadline is a major threat to peace and security in the world and called on the international community to try to compel the U.S. to meet its international commitments in this regard.
