TEHRAN, May 27 (MNA) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has said that Iran welcomes the capture of war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic.

“We hope that (the fact that) the crimes of Mladic and other suspects are being dealt with will pave the way for (the establishment of) lasting stability in the Balkans region,” Mehmanparst said on Thursday.

Mladic was the chief of staff of the Army of the Republika Srpska (the Bosnian Serb Army) during the 1992–1995 Bosnian War. In 1995, he was indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

The ICTY accused Mladic of being responsible for the 1992–1995 siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre.

He was on the run and in hiding for almost sixteen years until he was arrested by Serbian security forces on May 26, 2011 in Lazarevo, Serbia.
