Over the past two months, the police force has detected three million fireworks, including a variety of home-made grenades, firecrackers, and sparklers, he told the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.
Khancherli added that 128 people have been arrested for their involvement in the production and distribution of these fireworks.
He also urged citizens to report all cases of illegal distribution of fireworks to the police.
Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi earlier warned that the Judiciary and police forces will take firm action against people who cause unrest and disturb the peace during the celebrations of the Chaharshanbeh-Suri festival on March 16.
The Iranian traditional fire festival of Chaharshanbeh-Suri is celebrated on the last Tuesday night of the Iranian calendar year, which starts on March 21.
Every year, there are many casualties due to the fire festival.
A Health Ministry official recently told ISNA that during the celebrations of the Chaharshanbeh-Suri festival last year, three people were killed and four others were seriously injured.
The official also stated that 1817 people required medical treatment at hospitals due to injuries they received during last year’s Chaharshanbeh-Suri festival.
