TEHRAN, Sept. 26 (MNA) – The Saddam regime’s war against Iran in the 1980s brought sustainable security to Iran and the Persian Gulf region as local experts succeeded to make high technological advances and Iranians demonstrated great sacrificial acts during the war, said Yaha Rahim Safavi, the former IRGC chief and the current military advisor to the Supreme Leader said.

“The strength of Iranian fighters during 8 years of war (1980-1989 Iran-Iraq war) has turned into an example for all freedom seekers, independence loving people and liberation movements in the world of Islam,” Safavi told a gathering of Basij, IRGC, and police forces in the southern province of Bushehr.

The former IRGC Commander said industrial and scientific breakthroughs as well as many great achievements in defense strategy were directly resulted from the experience of eight years of war with Iraq.

“The fact that the foreign powers themselves admit the significant role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in providing peace and security to the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region is the outcome of many sacrifices made during (eight years of) the sacred defense” he explained.

“Today people of Palestine and Lebanon have learned the lesson of resistance from Iranian fighters,” Safavi added.

Hojjatoleslam Mohammadi Golpaigani, the chief of the Supreme Leader’s office, also addressed the gathering.

Golpaigani urged authorities to make greater strides in keeping records of the sacrifices made during the war in a bid to preserve the history of the sacred defense and familiarize the next generation with these sacrifices.
