TEHRAN, June 27 (Mehr News Agency) – The Provisional Friday Prayer Leader of Tehran Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati who is also a member of the influential supervisory body of the Guardian Council of the Constitution here Friday blasted the United States for interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.

He was referring to the remarks of the U.S. officials in support of the student unrest which broke out few weeks ago on the heels of a decision by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology to privatize the universities.

 

Delivering the Friday Prayers sermon, he said the United States tries to destabilize the Islamic system through its support for rioters in Iran, adding campaign against the United States today should be carried out through fighting the rioters.

 

The U.S. must not press Iran for its achievements in the field of nuclear technology which is solely for peaceful purposes. We utilize our technology for peaceful purposes he said adding, our history has proved that we are not an aggressor.

 

The U.S. has been pressuring Iran and its European allies to encourage Iran to sign an additional protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) allowing more vigorous inspections by the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

 

In a report on Iran’s nuclear program in mid June, the IAEA did not condemn Iran nor did it issue a resolution against Tehran despite U.S. pressures. It only called for more transparency and asked Iran to sign the additional protocol to the NPT.

 

Iran is a signatory to the NPT. The Chief of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei said in an interview with the CNN that Iran’s nuclear program is not a weapon program.

 

Iran says it is ready to sign the additional protocol provided other members of the NPT too fulfill their obligation of transferring technology to Iran and lift sanctions to assist Iran develop its nuclear program which is for peaceful purposes and is under the supervision of the IAEA.
