TEHRAN, Jun. 02 (MNA) – Iran’s athletics team became champions by claiming 40 colorful medals at the fifth West Asian Athletics Championship in Basra, Iraq.

Iran took first place with a total of 40 medals including 21 gold, 16 silver, and 3 bronze medals at the fifth West Asian Athletics Championship for men and women.

Iranian women athletes outperformed men, securing 17 gold, 12 silver, and 2 bronze medals, while men earned 4 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze.

Iraq and Qatar came in second and third with 39 and 12 medals respectively.

Alongside the host country, Iraq, thirteen other countries—Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, the UAE, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Yemen, Syria, and Iran—participated in 48 competitions.

The fifth West Asian Athletics Championship for men and women was held at Sports City in Basra, Iraq from May 29 to June 2, 2024.
