TEHRAN, July 8 (MNA) -- The most significant requirement for improving cooperation and relations between Iran and the European Union is the redefinition of the role of the EU, Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary General Ali Larijani said in Madrid on Friday.

Larijani made the remarks during a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos, adding that the European Union should revise its decision to halt financial assistance to the newly elected government in Palestine.

He went on to say that it is important that no preconditions or deadlines be set for the dialogue on Iran’s nuclear dossier.

Larijani stated that Iran will make constructive efforts to continue the dialogue on the EU nuclear proposal during the negotiations with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Tuesday.

He also underlined the necessity of developing political cooperation between Tehran and Madrid, adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks to establish lasting peace and security in the region and the world.

The two officials pointed out that Iran and Spain both have the capability to seek a fair and peaceful solution to the Middle East crisis and agreed that holding negotiations and clarifying ambiguities are the best ways to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
