In a tweet posted on his official account on Tuesday, Deputy Chief of Staff of the President for Political Affairs, Hamid Aboutalebi, said that the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has held a phone talk with the president of Lebanon Michel Aoun.
“Solidarity and consistency between ethnic groups, races and the followers of different religions in Lebanon can guarantee the foiling of foreign and regional plots,” he said in the tweet.
President Rouhani's phone conversation comes as Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his surprise resignation following a trip to Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
In his statement, Hariri accused Iran and the Lebanese Resistance Movement Hezbollah of meddling in Arab countries’ affairs – an allegation the two have repeatedly denied. Hariri’s decision to resign seems to have been influenced by his meetings with Saudi officials.
Meanwhile, Lebanese President Michel Aoun's office said that he had been informed of the resignation by phone "from outside Lebanon" and that the president awaited Hariri's return to hear the "circumstances of the resignation."
