“Barzani’s call for independence means further strengthening of ISIL and Tel Aviv, a new anarchy in the region and instability,” Parliament's General Director for International Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a tweet on Saturday. “A strong support for ‘Iraq’s national unity’ is the real support for ‘Iraqi Kurdish groups’.”
On Monday, Iraq’s Kurdistan held a referendum on independence despite widespread calls for its cancellation.
The move has met severe opposition from the United Nations, the US, as well as all major regional and international parties, all stressing that the separation of Kurdistan region from Iraq would cause a new wave of tension in the region which is already grappling with ISIL terrorists.
Iran has responded positively to the request of Iraq’s central government for lending support for preservation of the country’s territorial integrity.
