TEHRAN, Jun. 28 (MNA) – Young Iranian volleyball players failed to overcome Cuban rivals to taste their first defeat in Pool E of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship.

Competed in Brno of Czech Republic on Tuesday evening, the tough encounter saw both teams striving to open the second round of the tournament with a victory.

At the end of the day, it was Cuba who breezed past Iran 3-2 in the five-setter debut (25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 13-25, 15-8).

The Persian outfit managed to secure its position among the top eight teams of the prestigious FIVB event by thrashing rival from Italy (3-0), Ukraine (3-2) and Argentina (3-2) in the preliminary stage.

In the second round, however, Iranians have been placed in Pool E against national teams of Poland, Cuba and China.

The 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship will be the nineteenth edition of the international volleyball tournament and the world championship for men's national teams under the age of 21, organized by the sport's world governing body, FIVB.

The tournament is being hosted by Czech Republic in the cities of Brno and Ceské Budejovice from 23 June to 2 July 2017.
