TEHRAN, Jun. 20 (MNA) – Iran’s FM spokesman has slammed US recent restrictions against Cuba, saying the principled position of the Islamic Republic is to support independent nations in the world including Cuba.

Bahram Ghasemi on Tuesday stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the imposition of new restrictions on Cuba, and firmly believes in the inefficiency of the use of sanctions as a tool for exerting pressure on independent nations for weakening the will of people.

The Iranian diplomat went on to note the US dark record of imposing sanctions on independent nations, adding “perseverance and the strong will of the Cuban nation in the past five decades have rendered all of Americans’ policies and measures for sanctioning and bulling the country completely ineffective and futile.”

Ghasemi further voiced surprise over the fact that American authorities have yet to learn from their past mistakes and still continue with their wrong, failed and futile policies by ignoring the independence of other countries.

Donald Trump announced Friday that he is reversing the Obama administration's steps to normalize relations with Cuba by putting restrictions on US travel and commerce with Cuban businesses under the pretext of honoring human rights.
