TEHRAN, May 09 (MNA) – Iran’s Persepolis managed to defeat Al-Wahda of UAE 4-2 sealing a place in 2017 AFC Champions League Round of 16.

Competing in Group D of AFC Champions League on Monday, Persepolis pulled out a 4-2 victory over Al-Wahda in Azadi Stadium, Tehran.

The Iranian side, in dire need of a victory to advance, was quick to take the lead as Soroush Rafiei found the net only after 17 minutes. Short afterwards, Mehdi Taremi added one more goal to Iran’s tally.

In the second half, however, Al-Wahda came back to the game and could equal the result by Ahmed Al Akberi and Sebastian Tagliabue.

The hosts restored their lead a few minutes later thanks to Taremi who scored his second goal of the match. Having a gargantuan appetite for more goals, Taremi made a hat-trick twenty minutes before the showdown concluded to give Persepolis a sweeping victory.

Given that Group D leaders Al-Hilal, in a simultaneous match, won over Al-Rayyan in Doha of Qatar, the Iranian club pushed Qatari rivals into the second place and advanced to the next round together with Al-Hilal.
