Miguel Arias Cañete made the remarks while addressing the 1st Iran-European Union Business Forum on Sustainable Energy held in Tehran on April 29, 2017.
“Following the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), several Iranian ministries inked and implemented agreements. The European Union is eager to launch further cooperation with Iran in areas of energy, oil and gas as well as nuclear activities,” he concluded.
The official maintained that Iran’s trade turnover with Europe had risen by 79% as well as that its volume of exports to EU countries has grown by 300 per cent; “in 2016, the European Union made 11 billion dollars of investment in oil and gas industries hence its readiness to assist Iran in reaching economic prosperity.”
European Commissioner for Energy Cañete said Iran and EU held common grounds in energy security and increased consumption of clean energies hoping that the path will be paved for reinvigoration of cooperation between the two sides.
He said the main policy pursued by the EU in the field of boosting use of new energies was to seek new target markets; as such, Iran could mark a unique opportunity for diversification of destination markets.
On the basis of EU policies, clean energy production is expected to rise by 2020 since the Union believes that its dependency on oil and gas needs to be reduced to the maximum possible extent.
The official went on to state that by 2030, a total of 30% of EU electricity demand needs to be supplied through clean energy; “the European Commission for Energy is fully ready to transfer energy-efficiency and CO2 emission-reduction technologies to Iran and increase its investments here.”
