TEHRAN, Mar. 25 (MNA) – Iran has slammed as ‘selective and blatantly politically-motivated’ the UN Human Rights Council's resolution to renew the mandate of the UN special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi added that the resolution is merely a tool in the hands of a few countries to misuse the UN human rights mechanisms.

“This is for the seventh consecutive year that the Human Rights Council has extended the mandate of a special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, despite a lack of endorsement from the majority of member states, and with a mere reliance on the votes of a certain political bloc and its few regional allies which are themselves among the disgraced violators of human rights in the world and region,” Ghasemi said Friday.

He went on to add, “such a confrontational policy and destructive and failed approach of exerting pressure on other countries to gain their support for such selective and spiteful resolutions will regrettably undermine the UN’s credibility.”

“It will also disgrace those countries which aim, on the one hand, to tarnish the image of independent nations such as Iran that are not willing to comply with the neocolonial policies of some Western states, and on the other hand, to cover up their own various cases of human rights violation including crimes against humanity, war crimes and military aggressions,” he said.

“This resolution is void of necessity, credibility and professional backing,” the Iranian diplomat stressed.

Ghasemi, while highlighting Iran’s resolve for constructive cooperation aimed at an actual improvement of human rights situation in the country, went on to deem the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) the closest international mechanism to justice for investigating human rights issues in all countries within the framework of the United Nations.
