Ali Shamkhani, leader’s representative to the Supreme National Security Council was responding to liberation of Aleppo on Wednesday.
“Syrian government had been fighting for 6 years a battle to protect the Syrian territorial integrity against well-armed terrorists; military success on the ground however would not provide Syrian government and armed opposition a platform alternative to peaceful dialogue to hit a national conciliation,” Shamkhani said.
“With Syrian army now in a dominant position in Aleppo, Iran’s position that all sides should come to negotiation table and abandon militarism should be reiterated; cutting of the influx of the fresh terrorists from over the borders and subsided foreign contribution to the crisis along with withdrawal of Al-Nusra Front fighters from east of Aleppo had been influential in putting an end to further devastation of the city and human loss,” he added.
Shamkhani said ISIL had the western greenlight in invasion of Palmyra, which was devised to humiliate Russia as a Syrian alley in the north. “Waging a war of attrition through separating Al-Nusra from other armed terrorists was a strategy embraced by west and other countries playing a role in Syrian crisis to confront Syrian army in battering terrorists,” he asserted. “Regional coalitions supporting terrorism now have two options of encouraging and arming the remaining numbers of terrorists in a retaliation of Aleppo defeat or pressuring them to sit in negotiation table; we hope that the second option would be their choice to ultimately form a national unity government,” he concluded.
