TEHRAN, Nov. 26 (MNA) – The Islamic Republic of Iran officially signed up to World Energy Charter on Friday during the visit of Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian to Japan.

Chitchian signed the document in a ceremony held on the sidelines of the 27th Meeting of the Energy Charter Conference with the presence of Secretary General of Energy Charter Secretariat Urban Rusnak and Japan Minister for Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida as well as other representatives of Members States.

The main objective of the World Energy Charter is to better reflect the new realities in the energy sector, especially the energy growth in developing countries and cooperation of the participating nations for development, as well as countering common challenges in the energy sector. 

During the signing ceremony, Fumio Kishida expressed hope that cooperation among the Charter’s Member States would be able to play an effective role in dealing with the current challenges facing the international community, particularly in regards to combating environmental pollution.

The Conference brought together non-observer countries and other international organizations to confer on the issues of strengthening energy security by better mobilization of global energy architecture, addressing climate change and its impacts on Asia as well as challenges and opportunities for better global energy future.

In addition to Iran, Iraq, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Central African Union also signed up to the document.

The 27th Meeting of the Energy Charter Conference kicked off on Friday in Tokyo and continues with the third Ministerial Session on Saturday 26 November.
