This year’s edition of Festival des Libertés of Belgium hosted the screening of two Iranian documentary films, ‘Starless Dreams’ directed by Mehrdad Oskouei and ‘Sonita’ by Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, which were warmly received by the audience.
While ‘Sonia’ failed to win any awards, Oskouei’s film that has recently won the Special Jury Prize at Antenna Documentary Film Festival in Australia, and been nominated for Best Documentary Award at the Asia Pacific Screen Academy, scooped Special Jury Prize ‘SMartBe’ of the Belgian festival.
‘Starless Dream’ narrates the lives of a group of young Iranian women who live together in a correctional and rehabilitation center for a variety of reasons ranging from drug dealing and trafficking, to pick-pocketing and manslaughter. Though bored with their incarcerated life, they are, nevertheless, scared about what might happen to them once outside. As the New Year approaches, they all hope to celebrate it with their families.
The Brussels Festival of Liberties also known as Festival des Libertés, a music and documentary film festival, was held on October 20-29 in Brussels.
