Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, addressed the commemoration ceremony of the 71st anniversary of the United Nations on Sunday in Tehran, adding “the United Nations has had significant achievements in regard to climate change in recent years, but unfortunately, ensuring security for other countries has not materialized in this international body, and the UN with its current political structure cannot have a proper response to such conflicts.”
Araghchi noted the crisis in Syria that has led to the displacement of millions of people and death of thousands of others, adding “in such a situation, the UN has been only able to send humanitarian aid and call for a ceasefire, but the UN can play a much more significant role in restoring peace to Syria.”
The Iranian diplomat also referred to Saudis’ continued brutal aggression against Yemeni people, adding “regrettably, the situation in Yemen is also deplorable and the recent attacks that killed several civilians at a funeral procession has remained unaddressed.”
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly announced its readiness to help Yemeni people and a letter by Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif has been sent to the UN Secretary-General in regard to this issue,” he said.
Araghchi further expressed hope that the newly-appointed UN Secretary-General would take the required measures for solving this issue.
