The national team of Iran’s men wheelchair-basketball won its first event at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday. The Iranian basketball players defeated Germany 69-63 at Carioca Arena 1 stadium in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The Iranian squad under Abbas Aghakouchaki was comprised of Saman Balaghi, Mohammad Mohammad Nezhad, Esmaeil Hosseinpour, Vahid Gholamazad, Iman Bagzadehfard, Mohammad Sehi, Mohsen Tolouei, Hakim Mansouri, Omid Hadiazhar, Morteza Abedi, Morteza Ebrahimi, and Hassan Abdi.
To commemorate the loss of around 500 Iranian pilgrims in last year’s tragedy of Mina (September 2015) the Iranian squad of paralympian athletes to Rio is called the Mina delegation. The Mina delegation of Iranian Paralympians at the Rio Paralympics is comprised of 111 sportspeople who vie at 12 fields of the 23 athletics.
