TEHRAN, Aug. 25 (MNA) – Iran’s Hassan Rouhani has sent a message of sympathy to Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, offering condolences to the government and people in quake-hit regions.

Addressed to Mr. Renzi, the message ensured Italian official of possible humanitarian aid to the victims of the earthquake which hit Amatrice and flattened towns and homes in tremendous scale; “we feel sympathetic to the bereaved families of victims and the news of the quake and ensuing casualties disturbed us; I would convey heartfelt condolences of Iranian government and nation to you, Italian government, and people,” read the message.

A strong earthquake struck a mountainous stretch of central Italy early Wednesday, killing at least 241 people, trapping scores under debris and setting off tremors that awakened residents in Rome, nearly 100 miles to the southwest. Officials revised down the number of dead after earlier giving a figure of 247.
