In today’s world, the application of advanced scanning methods and 3D printing in restoring and creating replicas of monuments and tourist sites has been widely noted in many museums and cultural centers of the world. In Iran, too, the restoration and preservation of antiquities have always been one of the key responsibilities of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization.
For this purpose, the advanced manufacturing and material technologies development headquarter of vice presidency for science affairs is planning to apply additive manufacturing technologies to restore or create exact replicas of the country’s ancient sites.
Based on interactions made between Iran’s National Museum and the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, a number of monuments have been selected for the project. The first phase of the project is considered as a specialized one and the advanced manufacturing and material technologies development HQ is calling on interested domestic companies to participate in the project.
The first phase includes ‘photogrammetry’, ‘making a three-dimensional computer model’, ‘3D printing of the piece’, and ‘final procession of the piece (if necessary)’.
The final scale for the printed piece (dimensions as compared with the original) and the technology to use can be decided by the project managers.
